The following is the first of posts on conspicuous marks related to concealed and deniable carry. This one is pertaining to the AIWB shirt marks.
When the majority of people conceal carry a handgun, they pay extra attention to their firearm signature, also called printing.
However, one of the most insidious “tells” is of a passive nature. Worn enough, your gun’s rear sight can slowly erode your t-shirt or polo shirt’s fabric around the area where your rear sight is located, and create one to two small holes. Those holes are conspicuous and will betray you, especially in a Non-Permissive Environment where guns are outlawed. Moreover, doing lots of draws can also stretch and damage the fabric, and lead to the same telltale signs.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, tell me if you see any tells, at all.
Doing a wardrobe check as well as quickly glancing in the mirror before leaving your Code Green area is CRUCIAL.
The type of fabric can exacerbate or mitigate the hole(s) appearance.
There are some ways to mitigate or eliminate that risk:
- Select clothing made out of thicker material
- Rotate cover garments often to reduce chafing from occurring
- Choose or print designs that facilitate the concealment of such holes
- Have your tailor or seamstress sew (if feasible and discreet) a protective band around the area most commonly affected.
Always check your clothes before putting then on.
Like the old proverb says, the Devil is in the details…
